Friends, As you may have heard, Wilderness Watch and 18 other environmental protection groups were recently notified by certain members of Congress that they are initiating an investigation into our work. In their letter, they call us “radical” and “extremist” for successfully using the court system to force our government to comply with environmental laws, and they note concern about our “emotive messaging.” While Congress certainly has oversight power to ensure legislation is functioning as intended, the tenor of the letter suggests a more concerning motive. Let us be abundantly clear: Seeking redress through the courts and speaking up for the wild are lawful and constitutionally protected activities, and civil liberties are essential to functioning democracies. Moments like these only strengthen our commitment to the work we do because we know what we’re fighting for—all the wild places and wild ones that need an unwavering voice, present and future generations who need clean air and clean water and healthy ecosystems, and the broader community of life whose interests and rights should be respected by those wielding power. Wilderness is not partisan, and it needs our voice now more than ever. We will continue to show up, and we know our members and supporters will too. Onward, Dana Johnson Executive Director |
