Your calls and emails over the past few weeks have helped shine a bright light on the anti-wilderness and anti-public lands provisions contained in various iterations of the Big Bad Budget bill. Thanks to your actions, the following terrible provisions have been stripped from the Big Bad Budget Bill: The sale of up to 3.3 million acres of public lands; construction of the Ambler Mining Road through the Gates of the Arctic National Preserve; and mining at the doorstep of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Now we urgently need your help again! Please call your two senators and your House rep at 202-224-3121, urging them to oppose any budget bill that doesn’t remove new oil and gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Western Arctic. Here’s a call script to use: "As your constituent, I’m urging you to oppose any budget bill that doesn’t remove new oil and gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Western Arctic. If this provision isn’t removed, please vote no on the entire budget bill. Thank you.” At nearly 20 million acres, the Arctic Refuge is America’s largest National Wildlife Refuge and is unparalleled in its wild grandeur, ecological wholeness, and vast scale. The entire Arctic Refuge is designated Wilderness or recommended for wilderness designation by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Polar bears, caribou, muskoxen, wolves, Dall sheep, brown bears, arctic foxes, and more than 200 species of birds depend on the Refuge for survival. Oil and gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Western Arctic would be catastrophic for these wild ecosystems and has no place in the Big Bad Budget Bill. Please call your two senators and your House rep at 202-224-3121, urging them to oppose any budget bill that doesn’t remove new oil and gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Western Arctic. |
