The good news: Your emails and calls are working! The bad news: The Big Bad Budget Bill is not dead yet! While the budget process in Washington D.C. remains fluid and fast-moving—and provisions impacting Wilderness and America’s public lands legacy are being added and removed from the House and Senate budget bills at breakneck speed—the most important thing is for you to continue raising your voice. Click here to take action! To date, various iterations of the Big Bad Budget Bill have included: - Mandating the sale of up to a whopping 3.29 million acres of public land in all western states, except Montana.
- Requiring more oil and gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Western Arctic—some of the wildest, most-intact ecosystems left on Earth.
- A provision giving public lands at the doorstep of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota to a foreign mining corporation for toxic copper-sulfide mining in the Boundary Waters watershed.
- Approval of a key right-of-way for construction of the Ambler Mining Road, a 211-mile road building project through the Gates of the Arctic National Preserve.
- A provision that would effectively gut the National Environmental Policy Act—America’s bedrock environmental law—and ban any judicial review of NEPA decisions, including those that impact Wilderness and its wildlife.
Click here to urge your House rep to vote NO on any budget bill that includes provisions undermining Wilderness and public lands protections, including selling off any public land. After you write, please also call your House rep at 202-224-3121 to make sure your voice is heard. Here’s a call script to use: "As your constituent, I'm calling to urge you to vote NO on any budget bill that contains provisions threatening Wilderness and public lands. Specifically, I urge you to oppose provisions that mandate any sale of public lands, force oil and gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Western Arctic, permit construction of the Ambler Mining Road through the Gates of the Arctic National Preserve, and gut the National Environmental Policy Act. Thank you.” |
