We wanted to share some good news about our public education push to fend off one of the most egregious efforts in the past 60 years to undermine the 1964 Wilderness Act—Senator Mike Lee’s (R-UT) bill to weaken the Wilderness Act and potentially blast open every Wilderness in the nation to mountain bikes and other forms of mechanized transportation. Last week, our conservation director, Kevin Proescholdt, wrote an excellent essay for the op-ed syndication service Writers on the Range, which has already appeared in over forty newspapers across the American West, including the Denver Post and Salt Lake Tribune. Click here to read Kevin’s essay, “Mountain bikers push to ride through Wilderness,” and consider adding your own comment in support of the Wilderness Act. There are a few other ways you can help keep Wilderness wild and free from mountain bikes and other types of mechanized transportation. First, please consider writing a letter to the editor in opposition to Senator Lee’s radical bill to undermine the Wilderness Act. Even if Kevin’s piece didn’t run in your local paper, you can help spread the word about this significant threat to the Wilderness Act. Click here for some general talking points. Remember, letters to the editor are a great way to help educate a wide audience about the importance of the Wilderness Act and America’s National Wilderness Preservation System. Not only is the opinion page one of the most read sections of the newspaper, but members of Congress and other public officials read and pay attention to letters to the editor as well. Next, if you haven’t yet, please stand together with over 14,000 Wilderness defenders who have already signed our petition urging Congress to reject Senator Mike Lee’s bill that would weaken the Wilderness Act. Add your name here! Together, we will defend the Wilderness Act and America’s National Wilderness Preservation System. |
