The "extinction caucus" in Congress wants to gut the Endangered Species Act (ESA) even as the world faces a biodiversity and extinction crisis!
They’ve just introduced radical legislation to drastically weaken the ESA and decrease protections for threatened and endangered species—including imperiled species that call Wilderness home.
Please speak up today to stop this brazen attack on the ESA and help save America’s imperiled plants and wildlife!
Many of the threatened and endangered species protected by the ESA—such as wolverine, grizzly bear, West Indian manatee, desert tortoise, bull trout, Canada lynx, Florida brickell-bush, and whitebark pine—are found within America’s National Wilderness Preservation System. And they won’t be spared if this radical bill becomes law!
If passed by Congress, the so-called "ESA Amendments Act of 2025" (H.R. 1897) would gut the critical protections that the ESA provides for thousands of imperiled species, upend the scientific consultation process, fast-track delistings even if species aren’t recovered, and allow much more exploitation of threatened and endangered species, including harming, killing, and harassing species—even in Wilderness.
For over 35 years, the ESA has been one of the most effective environmental policies in America, with 99 percent of listed species being saved from extinction. And for over 35 years, Wilderness Watch has relied on the ESA to help protect threatened and endangered species that use Wilderness for part or all of their range.
Now we need you to help us protect these imperiled species by raising your voice to defend the ESA! Write your U.S. House Rep and demand they stand up for the Endangered Species Act and oppose H.R. 1897.
