Take Action to Protect America's National Monuments from the Trump Administration!
On April 26, 2017 President Donald Trump issued Executive Order 13792, directing the U.S. Department of the Interior to review 27 of America's National Monuments designated or expanded since 1996 under the Antiquities Act.
Make no mistake! This is nothing less than an all out assault on America's public lands legacy by President Trump and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke at the request of the oil and gas, coal, mining, grazing, and timber industries.
Presidents of both parties have used the Antiquities Act – signed into law by Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 – to enact far-sighted protections for our common American inheritance. To roll back these protections would be an unprecedented, and possibly even illegal, attack on America’s public lands heritage.
Specifically, the following 27 National Monuments and National Marine Monuments are currently under review:
Basin and Range, Bears Ears, Berryessa Snow Mountain, Canyons of the Ancients, Carrizo Plain, Cascade-Siskiyou, Craters of the Moon, Giant Sequoia, Gold Butte, Grand Canyon-Parashant, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Hanford Reach, Ironwood Forest, Mojave Trails, Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks, Rio Grande del Norte, Sand to Snow, San Gabriel Mountains, Sonoran Desert, Upper Missouri River Breaks, Vermilion Cliffs, Katahdin Woods and Waters, Marianas Trench National Marine Monuments, Northeast Canyons and Seamounts National Marine Monument, Pacific Remote Island National Marine Monument, Papahanaumokuakea National Marine Monument and the Rose Atoll National Marine Monument.
These public lands, waters and historical sites represent a crucial part of our American heritage. These National Monuments protect Native American sacred ground, critical habitat for threatened and endangered species, clean water, preserve areas of historic and scientific value and help support local economies with opportunities for recreation and tourism.
These 27 National Monuments are also home to 30 federally designated Wilderness areas, which would be harmed if the public lands around them lose protection. National Monuments benefit these 30 Wilderness areas because the public lands surrounding the Wildernesses also have some form of protection, which improves conditions for wildlife and traditional recreation experiences.
Please take action today and let Secretary Zinke and the Trump Administration know that you are adamantly opposed to any and all efforts to revoke, reduce in size or diminish protections for National Monuments!
America's National Monuments need your help more than ever, so please take action right away!
