America's Wilderness Study Areas in Montana are under attack—yet again.
Anti-wilderness Congress members Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) and Representative Troy Downing (R-MT) have reintroduced their bill to slash protections for more than 156 square miles of some of the wildest federal public lands in Montana.
The intent of their so-called “Montana Sportsmen Conservation Act” (S. 3527 and H.R. 6788) is clear: take away protections for 100,000 acres of the Middle Fork Judith, Hoodoo Mountain, and Wales Creek Wilderness Study Areas (WSA) so these wildlands can be logged, roaded, mined, and torn up by off-road vehicles.
This bill would strip away 50 years of protection for the Middle Fork Judith WSA, which Congress designated in 1977 with the mandate that its existing wilderness character be protected. And it would strip away more than 45 years of protection for the Hoodoo Mountain and Wales Creek WSAs, which the Bureau of Land Management established in 1980 to administer as “unimpaired” for future wilderness consideration.
These federal Wilderness Study Areas belong equally to everyone, and they also provide essential habitat for grizzly bears, gray wolves, Canada lynx, bull trout, elk, and mountain lions.
In the midst of a biodiversity crisis, the last thing our nation needs to do is develop more wild places.
